Cycling Resources

New York City and Jersey City offer an incredibly unique urban landscape to explore by bicycle. Understanding the challenges and opportunities of cycling in the city will help ensure your experiences behind the handlebars are comfortable and safe. Educate yourself- there are many excellent cycling organizations that provide a wealth of information, and seek out additional advice if you have unanswered questions or concerns. We encourage every cyclist to be informed and confident when they steer onto shared roadways.

Need a helmet? Here are three ways to get one:

Buy a helmet from a local bike shop or helmet designer, listed below. Save money on a helmet as a Citi Bike Annual Member! Along with your Citi Bike key, you'll receive a coupon good for $10 off one Bell, Bern, Bontrager, Giro, Nutcase, Triple Eight, or Uvex helmet at participating bike shops in NYC and Jersey City. A helmet discount coupon is valid for roughly 60 days after arriving in the mail, and must include your Member key number in order to be redeemed. No key number listed on your coupon? Please write it in before purchasing your helmet; find the number under the bar code on your Citi Bike key.

Citi Bike Annual Members can also opt to redeem their helmet coupon for 10% off a one-of-a-kind, hand-painted Inkwell Helmet, designed and created here in New York by artist Danielle Baskin. Check out the helmets and redeem your discount by contacting Inkwell Helmets directly for a consultation and studio visit, or by visiting Hub Station, Adeline Adeline, or Eleanor's.

Similarly, Citi Bike Annual Members can use their helmet coupon for $10 off a stylish Sawako Furuno helmet. Available at Adeline Adeline, Cloak & Dagger, and Eleanor's, you may also contact Sawako Furuno directly (see right) to redeem your coupon. Bandbox also offers Citi Bike members $10 off their "hidden" helmets, which look like hats! Find them online (see right) or at Bicycle Habitat.

Rent a helmet. Many bike shops offer helmet rentals. And Bike & Roll, one of New York's largest bicycle rental companies is now renting helmets for $3/day or $15/week. You can pick one up at any Bike & Roll location and return to any Bike & Roll location. They have seven locations located near Citi Bike stations.

Receive a free helmet and fitting from the Department of Transportation. NYC DOT fits and gives away the official New York City bicycle helmet at events throughout the city. Call 311 or visit the DOT Web site to find a list of upcoming events.
